So now I smile I reminisce and I think it was right to wait Wait For the right time to say Momma I know it was hard When I was born You couldn’t bear to get a job You couldn’t let yourself mourn When my daddy left you Were stressed Your best was a mess And even then I was oppressed But you didn’t know just like the rest So as I detest being addressed As anything less then you or her or him or them I take a deep breath And try to calm down Else I’ll go into cardiac arrest As my nightmares manifest And I think ‘oh god My children will grow up in a world Where they’ll be persecuted by the colour of their skin Or the gender of whom they show an interest in’ Just like me And my family before me And their family before them And so on And I smile because At least we’re not slaves, right? Wrong Why should we live in a place Where they judge us of our race And we’re killed without a case And we’re dead without a trace So as everyone claims that we’ve come so far While we still live in a world like this Honestly, I find it bizarre “the world is so much better now, We don’t enslave people, Because they have a different skin colour, anymore” Is that really where we have set the bar?

Really

Mum,
I know it was hard
When I was born.
You couldn’t bear to get a job,
You couldn’t let yourself mourn
My daddy,
Whom when he left,
You were stressed,
Your best was a mess,
And even then I was oppressed
But you didn’t know just like the rest.
So as I detest being addressed
As anything less
than you or her or him or them,
I take a deep breath
And try to calm down
Else I’ll go into cardiac arrest,
As my nightmares manifest.
And I think ‘oh god,
My children will grow up in a world
Where they’ll be persecuted by the colour of their skin
Or the gender of whom they show an interest in.'
Just like me,
And my family before me,
And their family before them,
And so on,
And I smile because at least we’re not slaves,
right?
Wrong.
Why should we live in a place
Where they judge us of our race,
And we’re killed without a case,
And we’re dead without a trace?
Everyone claims that we’ve come so far...
But we still live in a world like this
Honestly, I find it bizarre.
“The world is so much better now,
We don’t enslave people,
Because of their colour...,
anymore”
Is that really where we've set the bar?
